Allen Gardens, Hackney

A complex project of repair and rehabilitation of 73 general needs flats in an historic social housing estate, for One Housing Group. Designed by Matthew Allen and built in 1875 the buildings pioneered the use of reinforced concrete and are Grade II listed.

The proposals were drawn up in close consultation with both English Heritage and the London Borough of Hackney. A phased programme of repairs and alterations began in 2010 to upgrade the estate to current standards and to resolve longstanding problems arising from the innovative construction methods.

The fourth and final phase was successfully completed in 2014.
